These wonderful photos of the Dolomites were taken by the daughter of an Italian friend of mine during a recent hiking holiday.
The Dolomites are a section of the Alps in Northern Italy formed by dolomite, a type of carbonate, hence the unique color and shape of the mountains. The Dolomites have been declared a National Heritage site by UNESCO.
I learned only recently from a book titled The White War: Life and Death on the Italian Front 1915-1919 that the Dolomites were part of the front line between the Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces after Italy declared war on the Hapsburg Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1915. The front line, which included the Dolomites, was the scene of some of the fiercest fighting of WWI.
